Progress Update on Task 7.6: Enhancing occupational and social health and safety

The main purpose of this task is to promote public awareness of potential hazards associated with handling of toxic and hazardous substances and knowledge of how to react to accidental hazardous material release, fire and explosions through various communication channels to potential stakeholders.

The task is currently progressing on two fronts:

  • Guidelines for health and safety for ship crew
    • A report is being developed to provide guidelines to ship crew and potentially port operators on the occupational and health safety of using ammonia as a marine fuel.
  • Educational/training material for safe operation and treatment of ammonia on-board
    • A short teaching course will be developed to provide an overall understanding of the safety issues related to the use of ammonia as a fuel on-board ships.
