NH3CRAFT Project Showcased at NTUA Laboratories Open Days

During the NTUA Laboratories Open Days, held from 12–14 March 2025, the NH3CRAFT project was prominently featured at the Shipbuilding Technology Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). Throughout the event, the NH3CRAFT project banner was on display, and brief presentations of the project’s objectives were delivered to various visiting groups—mainly high school students and educators. This outreach activity provided a valuable opportunity to engage younger audiences and raise awareness of the importance of sustainable fuel technologies in the maritime sector.

The NH3CRAFT project, co-funded by the European Union under Horizon Europe (Grant Agreement No. 101056831), is dedicated to developing safe, efficient, and scalable solutions for the storage and transport of ammonia as an alternative marine fuel. Its core aim is to demonstrate the feasibility of a 1,000 m³ ammonia containment system operating at 10 bar pressure on board a 31,000 dwt multi-purpose vessel. The project focuses on several key areas, including the development of both metallic and composite tank designs, advanced safety strategies, virtual modelling, risk assessment, and the establishment of guidelines to support regulatory certification. By advancing ammonia-based fuel technology, NH3CRAFT contributes to the EU’s broader targets for climate-neutral maritime transport, in line with the Green Deal and FuelEU Maritime initiatives.

As the project enters its final phase, two major events are scheduled to present its outcomes and foster dialogue with industry and policy stakeholders. The first is the NH3CRAFT Final Demonstration Event, which will take place in Thessaloniki from 12 to 14 May 2025. This event will focus on showcasing the project’s main technical achievements and validating the ammonia storage system through dedicated demonstrations and stakeholder engagement activities.

The second event, the NH3CRAFT Final Event Workshop, will be held in Athens on 15 May 2025. This workshop will gather all project partners, the EU project officer, additional EU officials as needed, and key external stakeholders from the maritime industry. The workshop will include presentations on the project’s development and outcomes, virtual demonstrations of the final results (including videos and a 3D model of the ammonia tank designs), and expert discussion panels. It will also feature contributions from EU representatives addressing the strategic outlook for ammonia and other alternative fuels in the waterborne transport sector, as well as discussions on future exploitation opportunities.

NH3CRAFT is a Co-funded by the European Commission Project. UK participation in NH3CRAFT Project is funded by UK Research and Innovation(UKRI) under the UK government’s Horizon Europe guarantee [grant numbers 10038548 and 10037828].
