Organized by the Waterborne Technology Platform, Waterborne Days 2025 took place in Brussels on 4 and 5 February 2025. This event served as a premier gathering for professionals in the waterborne transport sector, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and the future of waterborne transport.
On 5 February 2025, the NH3CRAFT project participated in the event, presenting its progress in ammonia storage and fuel systems for maritime applications. The project was proudly represented by HYDRUS partners, Mr. Astrinos Papadakis and Mr. Konstantinos Sykaras, who shared key insights during the Ammonia Workshop.
The presentation highlighted the development of metallic and composite ammonia fuel tanks, designed for modular and scalable integration, as well as the full-scale retrofit plan for a 31,000 DWT general cargo vessel, demonstrating the feasibility of ammonia as a maritime fuel. Additionally, the team discussed the issuance of a New Technology Qualification (NTQ) by ABS for ammonia fuel storage and auxiliary systems, alongside ongoing contributions to regulatory frameworks through IACS and IMO. The project’s qualitative and quantitative risk assessments, as well as the integration of digital tools for monitoring ammonia-powered vessels, were also covered.
As NH3CRAFT moves toward its final event and demonstration phase, an important announcement was made regarding the upcoming physical demonstration of prototype ammonia tanks and auxiliaries at onshore facilities in May 2025. The event provided a platform for NH3CRAFT to engage with industry experts, policymakers, and stakeholders, reinforcing ammonia’s role in the decarbonization of maritime transport.
More updates will follow as the project reaches its final stage.
