The production of ammonia tanks in composite construction for maritime applications involves advanced manufacturing processes to ensure high durability, chemical resistance, and pressure stability. This document outlines the key steps involved in the production process, with specific reference to the expertise of Connova, a leading company in the field of composite technologies.
1. Fabrication of the PA6 Inliner
The tank’s core component is a PA6 inliner, which guarantees both leak-tightness and chemical resistance. This inliner is produced using the rotational molding process. During this process, powdered PA6 material is heated and rotated within a mold to evenly coat its interior surfaces. The result is a seamless, uniform structure that serves as the tank’s foundation.


2. Precision Manufacturing of Metal Fittings
For the tank’s connections, precision metal components are fabricated using CNC machining techniques. This ensures that the fittings meet exacting standards for dimensional accuracy and mechanical strength. These fittings are designed to integrate seamlessly with the composite structure while maintaining durability under harsh operating conditions.


3. Reinforce the Tank Blank with Glass Fibers and Epoxy Resin
After the pre-assembly of the metal fittings to the inliner, the blank is wrapped with composite materials. This process involves the use of high-performance glass fibers and epoxy resin. Connova employs specialized filament winding equipment to lay the fibers in precise orientations based on finite element method (FEM) analysis. This ensures that the tank achieves optimal pressure stability and stiffness for various load scenarios. The fibers are applied in multiple angles to address the specific mechanical demands of the tank.
Upon completing the wrapping process, the tank undergoes curing in an oven. A carefully controlled temperature profile is applied to solidify the epoxy resin, resulting in a robust and resilient composite structure.



4. Quality Control and Final Assembly
The cured tank undergoes rigorous quality control checks to verify its performance. These tests include:
• Geometric inspection to ensure dimensional accuracy.
• Hardness testing to confirm material integrity.
• Weight measurement to verify compliance with design specifications.
• Leakage testing to validate the tank’s tightness under pressure.
Following these evaluations, mounting feet and securing straps are installed. These components prepare the tank for installation at its designated location on the vessel.
